2022 Last of 5 Cinsault

Last of 5 pays homage to one of the oldest Rhône grapes to find its way to California. Originally known as Black Malvasia, Cinsault dates all the way back to the 19th century in California and has very unique characteristics that make it very enjoyable as a single varietal. The grape itself is known to have larger berries and thinner skins, which provide a nice freshness and approachability to be enjoyed young, but the skins are very darkly colored which creates a striking color while still having soft and supple tannins. These attributes all make for a wine that doesn’t need extensive time developing in barrel prior to bottling, so we gave this wine just 5 months in oak before capturing in the bottle. With this you see many of the wonderful smells and flavors from fermentation that are still present in this youthful table wine, which makes it a great red wine to give a slight chill and enjoy on a warm day. Last of 5 is named after Winemaker, Drew Nenow, who is the youngest of 5 total siblings. Just as Drew was the baby of the family, this wine is the baby of our portfolio of wines.

Sticky fruits and earthy undertones, boysenberry syrup and rhubarb funk lead the way on an impressively showy nose that smells like fermentation in a glass. Hiding behind the heavy and rich notes is a bright note of fresh blackberry and strawberry tart that brighten and lighten with a lightly spiced back note of nutmeg. Fresh tones of blueberry dominate the entry and soft tannins in the core fill the palate with elderberry, cedar, and juicy cranberry. Flashy fruit and an acidic freshness make for a moderately long finish of red cherry and brown sugar.
